A bit about the letters:
The Dear Art letters have been a large part of my art practice over the last 7 months.  Since I began writing them in April of last year, they have been an incredible tool for me in terms of looking at and understanding what I am doing as an artist. I’ve also used letter-writing in other areas of my life with the intention of achieving greater awareness through the process.  I start with Dear Art, and the rest of the letter flows.  Then I get to look at what I’m thinking about in a more constructive way.
The letter writing process is expanding into something that I use in my teaching and in workshops as well.  At a recent Art and Nature event in Downtown Historic park, I wrote letters to plants with students with the intention of listening to the plants and to ourselves.  The sharing of the letters afterwards was deep and beautiful.  Please try the letter writing process if you are interested.

free cinder blocks – expansion

performance

may 2009

This project is the release of an art object – its transition from the public into the private sphere. It is an investigation and invasion of personal space . The distribution of the cinder blocks dismantles a figurative wall – a metaphor for personal and institutional barriers. The blocks’ potential becomes diffused and less threatening as they are cast as cup holders and foot-side companions. What is the result of this transition? What are its benefits or weaknesses?
